Litt (Doctor of Letters) from the University of Wales. He was Professor and the inaugural head of the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, and founding Director of the Tom Hopkinson Centre for Media Research at Cardiff University from 1996 to 2000. He has held academic positions at Murdoch University, the Polytechnic of Wales, and Edith Cowan University. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (FAHA) in 2001. In 1998, Hartley founded the 'International Journal of Cultural Studies', published by Sage Publications Ltd in London.Hartley is at the forefront of international research in the uses of media.
