He is known for his book “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs - An Autism Spectrum Guide to the Confusing World of Idioms, Metaphors and Everyday Expressions”, written from first-hand experience of high-functioning autism. He was interviewed by New Scientist, featured in the 7th April 2012 edition in the “One minute with...” section, describing how someone with autism “decodes the minefield of the English Language”.In addition to studying for his degree in Physics, Barton gives talks about the positive aspects of being on the autistic spectrum to a wide range of audiences, from conferences and schools to SENCos (special educational needs coordinators) and support groups. His biggest talks to date have been at the Autism Show in both London and Manchester.Barton is also an accomplished musician, playing jazz piano, bass guitar, drums and percussion (including virtuoso spoons) with a variety of bands, including his family band The Sticklebacks. He also enjoys Judo, having originally started at the age of 8. He has trained at numerous clubs and is the current President of the University of Surrey Judo Club.
