Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) after Claudius Ptolemy (2nd century AD), Egyptian mathematician, astronomer and geographer, who introduced the system of coordinates of latitude and longitude for fixing positions on the Earth's surface.
