- catalog abstract "In nontechnical language, the author describes the projects and future possibilities in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Within the infinite universe there exists the infinite possibility that we are not alone. Since 1959, scientists engaged in the SETI effort (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) have been quietly searching the cosmos for evidence of intelligent life--a discovery, that, if made, will be the most dramatic event in human history. And it's getting harder to detect signals from space--the very technology that makes it possible to detect other civilizations is now clogging the skies with radio pollution from ground-based radio transmitters, spy satellites, and communications satellites. In this intriguing behind-the-scenes view of the search for ET, McDonough reveals recent scientific advances and controversies, battles with the government to get various projects funded, and international projects--particularly those of the Soviets. He also provides an entertaining look at Alien in literature and popular culture, as well some exciting speculation for the future.".

Subjects discussed are recruitment of Soviets, use of travelers and attachés, "listening posts", use of airplanes, balloon and U-2 overflights, espionage by submarine and boat, reconnaissance satellites, and pursuit of the Soviet target abroad.".

- catalog abstract "To examine the portraits of Elizabeth I is to witness the creation of the legend of the Virgin Queen, of Gloriana and her burgeoning empire. The history of the portraiture is that of the deliberate manufacture of an image powerful enough to hold together a people divided by both rigid hierarchy and religious belief. When Elizabeth came to the throne in 1558, her subjects had an all-too-vivid memory of military defeat and religious turmoil. Restoring stability to the kingdom involved the image of the Queen herself - over the years, she was transmuted from an elegant aristocrat into a cosmic vision. In Gloriana, Roy Strong provides a richly detailed analysis of all the major portraits. -- Book jacket. To examine the portraits of Elizabeth I is, as Roy Strong shows, to witness the creation of the legend of the Virgin Queen, of Gloriana and her burgeoning empire. The history of the portraiture is that of the deliberate manufacture of an image powerful enough to hold together a people divided by not only a rigid social hierarchy but also religious belief. When Elizabeth came to the throne in 1558 her subjects had a vivid memory of defeat in war and of religious turmoil - the bloody reign of her half-sister Mary had only just ended. The policy of restoring the stability of the kingdom necessarily involved the image of the Queen: over the years she was to be transmuted from an elegant aristocratic lady into a cosmic vision depicted standing on her realm of England or, even more boldly, clasping the whole world in her hand. In view of the uncertainty over the succession her mortality had to be denied: she was therefore presented, in a political act of rejuvenation, as a young woman, even when in her sixties. The successful proliferation of the image may be measured by the love and devotion inspired by a monarch who in the later years of her reign has been described as 'aged, toothless, bald and irascible'. For two decades, from 1580 to 1600, that propaganda machine worked triumphantly, and it was only in the very last years that it began to fail.".

- catalog abstract "This symposia series, founded in 1976, is devoted to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the field immunology, particularly as it relates to the immune recognition and responses to protein ad peptide antigens. Leading investigators are convened every 2 or 3 years for the purpose of consolidating the research on protein and peptide antigens of defined structure and to focus on these findings in the context of contemporary immunology. Each symposium has focused on a particular aspect of molecular and cellular immunology of proteins and peptides. It is extremely gratifying that, in the last 2-3 years, the scientific community has shown a heightened interest in the study and understanding of protein and peptide antigens. The third symposium was devoted to viral and bacterial antigens. Great advances have been made in recent years in the elucidation and synthesis of protein antigenic sites. These, together with advances in cloning, expression and sequencing of protein genes, have offered new avenues for the preparation of synthetic vaccines for viral, bacterial and other antigens. Such vaccines have been the aspiration of immunologists for over 20 years. The meeting has served to integrate and correlate the current knowledge of these systems with developing trends in immunology and to identify the most promising new directions for future investigations.".

- catalog abstract "Since 1966, at roughly three-yearly intervals, an international group of immunologists has met somewhere in Europe to discuss the latest developments in our understanding of the mechanisms governing the functioning of the immune system in vivo. These meetings have become known as the International Conferences on Lymphatic Tissues and Germinal Centers in Immune Reactions, or for the regular devotees, simply as the Germinal Center Conferences (GCC). This volume represents the proceedings of the 8th GCC, which was held in Babraham, near Cambridge, UK, between the 14th and 17th August, 1984.When one considers how cellular immunology has become increasingly dominated by in vitro methodology over the past twenty years, it may seem remarkable that these conferences have survived at all, let alone prospered. However, I for one do not find this surprising, since I suspect that the exquisitely complex architecture and microenvironments of the lymphoid system will never be fully understood through in vitro studies. If "the proper study of mankind is man", then surely ultimately the proper study of all the interacting elements which comprise the immune system has to be in vivo. This belief is shared by a substantial number of immunologists, as the contents of this volume will attest. Although the GCC were originally devoted to unravelling the mysteries of the germinal center response (and these are still not fully resolved), over the years the scope of the meetings has inevitably broadened. Thus, the present conference covered not only the development of B lymphocytes, but also T cell differentiation, the structural basis of immune induction and immunoregulation by products of lymphoid cells. Finally, to add a slightly applied finishing touch to the proceedings, there were sessions devoted to human lymphocyte subpopulations, and to the potentials of monoclonal antibodies as therapeutic agents. I hope that a perusal of this volume will convince you that in vivo cellular immunology is still alive and well, and that the Germinal Center Conferences continue to provide a unique forum for work in this important field.".

- catalog abstract "The complex question of the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands remains far from resolved, even after the military and political events that took place from April to June 1982. The first scholarly work of its kind, this broad and dispassionate study of the causes of the South Atlantic war between Britain and Argentina addresses the larger issues raised by the Falkland crisis and untangles a web of events and attitudes that stretch back over the past century. The book begins with a close evaluation of the two pivotal arguments: Argentina's stance that international law supports their historical right to the islands, and Britain's position that the length of their occupation of the Falklands, together with the principles of self-determination, legalized their de facto control. Gustafson then discusses how potential off-shore oil reserves, diplomacy, domestic politics, and the use of force entered into the sovereignty dispute; analyzes the effects of war on international relations; and considers possible future approaches to handling the dispute.--Publisher description.".
