- catalog abstract "Most streets and highways offer any number of folk figures to anyone who cares to see them. A few-like snowmen or scarecrows are ephemeral; but most of these folk forms have a longer life expectancy, and some like weathervanes or trade signs are older than the nation. Their makers seldom thought of themselves as artists, but when you compare such familiar forms as a pavement lid, a gravestone, or a neon sign with other of the same kind, you can readily see that one is better than another, and that the best are very good art indeed. The succinct text for A Carrot For A Nose and the exceptional illustrations have been brought together by a specialist on American folk art in a manner that invites you to see and judge for yourself the folk forms that are all around you. Working with photographs by some America's great photographers and with drawings from the celebrated index of American design, he explores why and how some of these forms came to be, and he considers their variety as expression of their maker's artistry. As he puts it-you can start out thinking about why a snowman has a carrot for a nose and end up with an aesthetic experience.".

- catalog abstract "From The Books Back Cover: Master of comedy, Moliere constructed his plays upon a foundation of laughter whose range and depth invested comedy with new dimension. His genius transformed the stereotyped comedy of his day into a highly developed form of artistic expression, in plays that are a superbly balanced orchestration of low comedy and elevated wit. Pillorying human vice, folly, and hypocrisy, these plays reveal beneath their high spirits and sunlit grace a vision often but a hair's breadth from the tragic. It is a vision and an art of enduring relevance and vitality, one that has exercised profound influence upon the modern theater, and enjoyed triumphant revival on the contemporary stage. These essays both define Moliere's role in the comic tradition, and explore the art and purpose of his individual works. Included among others are: The Actor/ Rene Bray; Moliere and Farce / Gustave Lanson; The Anit-Bourgeois / Paul Benichou; The Humanity of Moliere's Dom Juan / James Doolittle; Poquelin and Chaplin / Jacques Audiberti; Speech / Will G Moore.".

Marcel Chotkowski La Follette - editor of the journal Science, Technology, & Human Values, where much of this material was first collected - has rounded out this case book by adding an introduction, an extensive bibliography, and a review of the media coverage of the trial." -- Publisher description.".

- catalog abstract "This volume collects the papers presented at the "Second European Conference on Phagocytic Leucocytes" which was held in Trieste, September 15-18, 1980. The Conference was the continuation of the thread of a discourse initiated with the "First European Conference on Phagocytic Leucocytes," which was held also in Trieste in 1976. In fact, in both Conferences the biochemical aspects of the basic functions of phagocytes--that is movement, metabolism, secretion, and bactericidal activity--were mainly emphasized. In the Second Conference, two additional subjects were also dealt with, and those are the tumoricidal activity of phagocytes and the clinical aspects of phagocyte functions. In connection with the latter subject a "Round Table on the Clinical Application of Leucocyte Function Tests" was held during the Conference and the proceedings are reported in this book in the hope that they may be useful to those who are interested in the relationship between phagocytes and diseases. The number of papers which are being published concerning the phagocytic process is such that one wonders whether publication of a new book in this field is necessary. However, the philosophy which inspired the editing of this book differs from that underlying publication of original articles in scientific journals. We started from the common notion that the real progress of our knowledge is not necessarily proportional to the amount of published material in that specific field. Additionally, a true progress in knowledge requires a careful verification of the validity of the information that one receives a realistic analysis of the reasons of conflicting results and of controversies, and a severe criticism of erroneous or false problems which generate unuseful and confusing papers. The two European Conferences on Phagocytic Leucocytes were organized to meet those requirements. The worldwide participation in both Conferences (77 scientists from 15 countries in the First Conference, and 106 scientists from 14 countries in the Second Conference) guaranteed a broad exchange of opinions. Consequently, this book does not represent a mere addition of new papers to an already vast literature, but defines the present status of the art and the future trends of research in the field of phagocyte functions.".
