- catalog abstract "Briefly reviews the developing Sino-Soviet conflict since the 1950s and suggests appropriate U.S. policies. The United States benefits from a situation in which it has better relations with Moscow and Peking than they have with each other. American policy must seek to avoid actions that are likely to provoke either the Chinese or Soviets into action against the other, or draw them together. The most appropriate policy is one of distance if not detachment from the Sino-Soviet rivalry. The differences between Moscow and Peking appear sufficiently profound to endure irrespective of American actions, and purposeful efforts to play on their differences are only likely to alienate us from constructive relations with either country. A diminution of Sino-Soviet hostility could occur during the 1980s in the context of major generational changes in leadership in both countries. Hence, considerable circumspection is called for in any policy recommendations based upon anticipated future trends.".

- catalog abstract "In the barren landscape between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, adventurers of the nineteenth century suspected that the remains of fabled kingdoms lay beneath the sands. As they dug into the mounds of Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq), these European and American archaeologists struck treasures beyond their wildest dreams--the graves of the stupendous Old Testament cities of Nineveh, Babylon, and Ur, and artifacts leading back to the birth of civilization. Return to Babylon reveals the excitement, the danger, the international competition, and the extraordinary men and women who made this era of archaeological exploration one of the most dramatic of all time. Near Eastern archaeology in the nineteenth century was dangerous: diseases took their toll, the midnight air could register 114°, and roving bands of thieves frequently menaced the foreigners encamped at excavation sites. Still, these adventurers were smitten by the alluring East and propelled by a powerful curiosity.--From publisher description.".

- catalog abstract "This book, originally published in Moscow in 1965, is of interest to a wide scientific and technical audience, including geophysicists, meteorologists, aerodynamicists, chemical, mechanical, and civil engineers--in short, all interested in the fundamental problems of flow, mass, and heat transfer. The authors deal with the theory of hydrodynamic instability and the development of turbulence, the application of dimensional analysis, and the theory of similarity to turbulent flow in pipes, ducts, and boundary layers, as well as free turbulence. They discuss semiempirical theories of turbulence, develop the similarity theory for turbulence in nonhomogeneous media, and present Lagrangian characteristics of turbulence and the theory of turbulent diffusion. Every effort has been made to present a wealth of experimental material; a large number of examples are drawn from physics of the atmosphere, permitting a generalization of results beyond that which can be obtained in the laboratory. Considerable attention has been given to Kolmogorov's theory of the local structure of developed turbulence and to the theory of turbulence in stratified media.".

The author shows how Vergil enlarged upon Homeric similes until they became transparent signs for inner events. He also examines the architecturally structured sequence of mood and argues that, since Vergil, mood has become to poetry what light is to painting.".

It was published by Aldo in Venice in 1528 and almost immediately achieved international renown, being translated into English by Sir Thomas Hoby as early as 1561. Today it still remains the most vivid picture ever set down of Italian court life during the Renaissance; and in this new, unexpurgated translation has been, the discussions it records of what constitutes the "Perfect courtier" - and his ideal counterpart, the court lady - have an astonishing freshness and pertinence. Here is the Renaissance in its most charming aspect, with revealing sidelights on its social life, ethics, politics, humor, sports, and relations between the sexes. The 32 pages of pictures, chosen especially for this edition, portray some of the famous personages, scenes, and activities described in the book." -- from back cover.".

- catalog abstract "PUBLIUS AELIUS ARISTIDES (A.D. 117-180) was born at Hadriani in Mysia. Apparently wealthy, he was superbly educated. Among his teachers was Alexander of Cotiaeum, who later instructed Lucius Verus and the future emperor Marcus Aurelius. Aristides determined to become a professional orator at a time when Greek oratory was enjoying a renewed popularity. Early in his life his health began to fail, and his illnesses, partly real, partly imagined, often impeded, but never overcame his desire for success in his chosen career. Although at first a devotee of the healing god Sarapis, he later became a worshipper of Asclepius, at whose temple in Pergamum he spent two continuous years as an incubant and in whose cult he kept faith throughout most of his life. His stylistic abilities and his attempts at emulating the great Attic writers made him famous. He was on friendly terms with many of the most powerful figures of the province of Asia and with a number of high dignitaries of the Roman Empire. Fifty three separate works of his survive, among which are to be found criticisms of Plato, treatises on oratory, the source of the Nile, orations on provincial matters, prose hymns to various gods, the Panathenaic Oration and the speech To Rome. Of especial interest are the Sacred Tales, which provide through the narrative of his illnesses and his dreams over many years, a unique insight, particularly for psychoanalysts, into the psychopathology of a highly neurotic man of classical times.".

- catalog abstract "Dr Schaffer outlines the development of the mythological school of European Biblical criticism, especially its German origins and its reception in England, and studies the influence of this movement in the work of specific writers: Coleridge Hölderlin, Browning, and George Eliot. The 'higher criticism' treated sacred scripture as literature and as history, as the product of its time, and the highest expression of a developing group consciousness; it challenged current views on the authorship and dating of the Pentateuch and the Gospels, on inspiration, prophecy, and canonicity, and formulated a new apologetics closely linked with the growth of Romantic aesthetics. The importance of this study is that it shows that readings of specific literary texts can intersect with general movements of thought and action through the scrutiny of a clearly defined intellectual discipline, here the higher criticism, which developed as a particular expression of the larger trends in the history of the period. Dr Shaffer throws light on individual works of literature, the formation between England and Germany, and the bases of European Romanticism.".

- catalog abstract "CICEREO (Marcus Tullius, 3rd Jan. 106-7th Dec. 43 B.C.), Roman lawyer, orator and politician (and even philosopher), of whom we know more than of any other Roman, lived through the stirring era which saw the rise, dictatorship, and death of Julius Caesar in a tottering republic. In his political speeches especially and in his correspondence we see the excitement, tension and intrigue of politics and the part he played in the turmoil of the time. Of about 106 Speeches, delivered before the Roman people or the Senate if they were political, before jurors if judicial, 58 survive (a few of them incompletely). In A.D. 1345 Petrarch discovered copies of a collection of more than 900 Letters of which more than 800 were written by Cicero and nearly 100 by others to him. These afford a revelation of the man and all the more striking because they were not written for publication. Six Rhetorical works survive and another in fragments. Philosophical works include seven extant major compositions and a number of others; and some lost. There is also poetry, some original, some as translations from the Greek.".

- catalog abstract "From the Dust Jacket: During his 17 year career at General Motors, John De Lorean was one of the automotive industry's most controversial figures, and also one of its most talented and successful executives. So his resignation from GM in April, 1973 shocked the business community. When word leaked out that he was writing a book about life at General Motors, with journalist J. Patrick Wright, GM and the auto industry anxiously awaited its arrival. But in a jolting new move, De Lorean refused to let the book be published saying he feared that reprisals from GM would sink his attempts to launch a new car company. He continued to block publication of On A Clear Day You Can See General Motors for four years. Now in an unprecedented move this edition is being published without the cooperation of John De Lorean, General Motors or the original publisher. Nevertheless, because of his critical position in top management, De Lorean's disclosures of the inside workings of General Motors are nothing short of shocking. His highly critical assessment will blow the lid off of some of Detroit's most closely held secrets such as: Horrendous product decisions-the ill-fated Corvair's questionable safety was well documented and debated inside GM long before its introduction. Sinister business practices-GM executives were regularly dunned for substantial and possibly illegal political campaign contributions. Serious management blunders-hundreds of millions of dollars were wasted annually in capricious executive decisions which would have ruined smaller companies, but were easily absorbed by GM's vast enterprise. John De Lorean's story is more than an expose, however. It is a personal account of one modern executive's struggle with big business management. As the antithesis of the traditional, stodgy, dark-suited GM executive, De Lorean operated with flare and panache. He openly criticized his company and his industry when he felt they deserved it. He avoided the corporate social scene in favor of a cadre of friends that included professional athletes and movie stars. And he dated models and actresses who were often younger than the daughters of his fellow executives. While his life style chafed his superiors, his exceptional talents as an engineer and a crack executive, produced business success after success, and filled GM's coffers with profit. By age 47, his meteoric rise had placed De Lorean in a key management post, earning over half-a-million dollars a year, with an even-odds chance of becoming president of the industrial giant. But life at the top was a disappointment. De Lorean found his job on executive row to be boring. Moreover, he began to question GM's management system which he felt often promoted mediocrity, sometimes produced illegal and immoral business practices, and stressed personal loyalties to the detriment of the corporation. His efforts to push for change from within were fruitless. To these frustrations was added the startling revelation that resentments inside GM had been formed into a campaign to destroy him. So he quit. It is, therefore, from the privileged perspective of an ex-GM executive, that De Lorean reveals General Motors to be something quite different than the well-run, precisely managed corporation that is its public image today. At a time when Americans are demanding more reliability from American business, On A Clear Day You Can See General Motors demonstrates how one corporate leviathan grew less accountable to its many publics amid booming sales and dwindling competition. And it is this disclosure that makes this book an important document for citizens, politicians and businessmen.".
- catalog abstract "The subject of Christ's sacrifice on the Cross has mainly been treated in the context of general discussions of Atonement theory. This is inevitable, but when it occurs, his sacrifice tends to be confused with theories of substitution, satisfaction, and propitiation, in which case its nature is understood according to 'a priori' assumptions concerning the proper rationale of sacrifice. The result of this situation is that, according to their own convictions, historians of the Doctrine of the Atonement have either tended to accept sacrificial language in the Greek Fathers as evidence of the presence of the later Western theory of atonement, at any rate, in germ; or they have dismissed it as no more than the use of traditional Christian expressions which do not represent the real Doctrine held by the authors with whom we are concerned. In addition to this, the treatment of sacrificial language as one of the modes of expressing Atonement has meant that, in modern studies, the subject of Christ's sacrifice has been divorced from consideration of the sacrificial worship and service of the Church.".
- catalog abstract "This meticulously researched book provides a timely and absolutely indispensable guide to the nations of the Persian Gulf on which the West's security and oil supplies critically depend- their political regimes and policies, their economies and the mind-sets of their leaders. But it does more than that. Dr. Kelly, one of the world's leading authorities on the modern history of Arabia and the Gulf, for the first time tells the full story of how the West's supine policies deliberately pulled us out of the region and thus led inevitably to the dangerous power vacuum that now exists in the world's most important strategic area. The author also shows that one cannot fully understand the dangerous situation in which the West now stands with regard to its oil supplies without understanding the nature of the regimes in power in the Arabian peninsula. -- from Book Jacket.".
