Ms. Kirsten Westergaard empirically studied the situation of rural women in reference to two particular villages in Bangladesh. Patterns and nature of their functions, their low-profile in household decision-making, the agonies of the dowry system, restriction on their exposure to strangers, inadequate recognition of their unencashable but essential contributions in the process of production and income, the uninsured status of their security and their general state of backwardness have been painstakingly and sympathetically presented."--Page [i].".

- catalog abstract "A writer of great urbanity and poise, Washington Irving was America's first internationally acclaimed man of letters. Here in one volume are the writings that established his reputation and earned him the admiration of Hawthorne, Poe, Coleridge, Byron, Scott, and Dickens. Written in the character of an elderly gentleman of the old school, "Letters of Jonathan Oldstyle, Gent." is a series of comic reports on the theater, theater-goers, fashions, balls, courtships, duels, and marriages of his contemporary New York. "Salmagundi" continues this roguish style of satire and burlesque, and its freshness, energy, and accomplishment took the Anglo-American literary scene by storm. "A History of New York," a wild and hilarious spoof combining real New York history with political satire, is presented here in its original, unexpurgated version. "The Sketch Book" is a brilliant, captivating story collection that draws on vanishing folkways, depictions of Hudson Valley life, and fable; it contains Irving's best-loved stories, "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."".

- catalog abstract "Roland Barthes was the leading figure of French Structuralism, the theoretical movement of the 1960s which revolutionized the study of literature and culture, as well as history and psychoanalysis. But Barthes was a man who disliked orthodoxies. His shifting positions and theoretical interests make him hard to grasp and assess. This book surveys Barthes' work in clear, accessible prose, highlighting what is most interesting and important in his work today. In particular, the book describes the many projects, which Barthes explored and which helped to change the way we think about a range of cultural phenomena--from literature, fashion, wrestling, and advertising to notions of the self, of history, and of nature.".

- catalog abstract ""Since the proclamation in 1948 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the international instruments condemning torture have multiplied. Nevertheless, far from receding, this scourge has spread like a cancer in a large number of States of all political tendencies in all continents. At present, an international Convention against torture is in process of elaboration within the United Nations. There is no indication that it will be accompanied by the necessary provisions to ensure its implementation. An original and realistic proposal was launched four years ago by a Geneva lawyer, Jean-Jacques Gautier, who obtained the support of a number of Swiss and international experts. In 1978 the International Commission of Jurists adopted this idea and turned it into a Draft Optional Protocol, which is published in this booklet. In March 1980, the Government of Costa Rica submitted it formally to the UN Commission. In short, it proposes that, in order to ensure that the Convention Against Torture is really enforced, the States Parties undertake to authorize a Committee established under the Protocol to visit freely all places of detention within their territory. It is thus a procedure for prevention rather than for condemnation. This idea, inspired by the experience of the International Committee of the Red Cross, is making gradual progress. The creation of this new weapon in the campaign against torture is supported, in this booklet, by some personalities of world-wide renown."--Page 4 of cover.".

- catalog abstract ""Born into the male-dominated world of nineteenth-century, middle-class Pennsylvania society, Mary Cassatt became a feminist and turned what was a lady's accomplishment into a profession as a radical painter, working in Paris and exhibiting with the Impressionists. Degas, Manet, Gauguin and Pissaro, among others, knew and admired her work, and yet, since her death in 1926, Cassatt has received little critical acclaim, while her importance, both personally as an individual artist and historically within the evolution of Impressionism, has larged been obscured. The efforts of the feminist movement in the last decade, however, have stimulated public and critical interest in Mary Cassat. Griselda Pollock examines the reasons for the unjust neglect of one of America's outstanding artistic talents, gauging the wide variety of influences which shaped her career, from her commitment in her early oils and pastels to both the techniques of the Old Masters and to modernist ideas through to her later interest in the methods of Japanese printmaking."--Jacket.".

- catalog abstract "In spite of the wide-spread recognition that morphology has a place in generative grammar, Aronoff's book is one of the few proposals of a theory of morphology within that framework, and is certainly the most extensive. Much of the book centers around traditional observations concerning morphology, particularly those of the American structuralists, and how they are to be handled and/or explained within a generative account. In fact, in some respects Aronoff's model appears to re-adopt earlier, pre-generative views; e.g., his proposed class of allomorphy rules (see below) is reminiscent of what were called morphophonemic rules in an earlier tradition. However, in important respects that will be pointed out below, Aronoff's claims represent a departure from traditional assumptions as well as from earlier generative accounts. -- from http://www.jstor.org (Feb. 7, 2014).".

- catalog abstract "In the crowded history of opera, few singers have had such a long and distinguished career as Joan Sutherland. By 1960 "Joan" had virtually disappeared from her name, a recognition that she had become a prima donna. The beginning of the 1980s saw her singing as impressively as ever, repeating roles she had made famous more than twenty years previously and embarking on new ventures at a time when most sopranos would be thinking about retirement. The story of the Sydney secretary with a passion for singing who eventually became one of the greatest opera stars in the world could read as a catalogue of triumphs. But Sutherland's success, and her modest acceptance of it, has been set against a background of ill health and personal challenge that makes her seemingly effortless art on stage and recordings seem all the more remarkable. In this biography, written with the complete cooperation of Dame Joan and her husband Richard Bonynge, the full extent of her life and career is encompassed for the first time. There is also a reference section giving comprehensive details of first performances, recordings and a bibliography. The life of Dame Joan Sutherland is, in fact, largely the story of a notable partnership an interdependent association between herself and her mentor, Richard Bonynge, which has led to combined careers of the highest order and to such Sutherland accolades as "The Voice of the Century" and "La Stupenda."--Publisher.".

Ted Fox has written a history of the special combination of people and atmosphere at the Apollo; he lets the theatre's stars tell a large part of the story through personal anecdotes, augmented by a splendid array of rare pictures. - catalog abstract "All social theorists and philosophers who seek to explain human action have a 'model of man', a metaphysical view of human nature. Some make man a plastic creature of nature and nurture, some present him as the autonomous creator of his social world, some offer a compromise. Each view needs its own theory of scientific knowledge calling for philosophic appraisal and the compromise sets harder puzzles than either. Passive accounts of man, for example, have a robust notion of causal explanation but cannot either find or dispense with a self to apply them to. Active accounts rightly stress an autonomous self, but lack a proper concept of explanation. Martin Hollis takes these tensions and contrasts from the thought of sociologists, economists, and psychologists. He then develops a model of his own - one which seeks to connect personal and social identity through an ambitious theory of rational action and a priori knowledge, proposing a sense in which men can act freely and still be a subject for scientific explanation.".

Designed to be exemplary, works of this type were aimed at brethren outside the prison walls and functioned primarily as figurative dramatization of the test of fait all true believers must endure. These "relation," framed by scripture and by a sermon explicating the text, were usually read aloud in weekly or monthly installments during religious services. Utterly sincere and detailed recounting of suffering, they were nonetheless highly artificial. To use the form self-consciously, as Russell Banks has done, is not to parody it so much as to argue good-humoredly with the mind it embodies, to explore and, if possible, to map the limits of that mind, the more intelligently to love it.".
