- catalog abstract "This timely volume presents a synthesis of the ideas that emerged from a multidisciplinary colloquium held at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in August 1985. The aim was to assess the impact of drought as a major factor in the agrarian crisis in sub-Saharan Africa. Leading authorities engage in discussion of the African environment, the socio-political factors that generate famine, case studies of the effects of famine on these social structures, and finally possible lessons to be learnt on dealing with famine worldwide, thus developing an up-to-date and cohesive study of the problems of African development. Despite the current popular interest in the African famine problem, Drought and Hunger in Africa is the first major collection of the results that have emerged from the recent profusion of research relating to the subject. As such, this book has relevance, not only in Africa, but also to scientists, social- scientists and policy makers in the West, and to other areas of the third world which are facing the problems of drought and famine.--Publisher description.".

Why did the crew steam full speed ahead into dangerous waters despite six wireless warnings? How able was the doomed behemoth's superb seaman Captain Smith? - catalog abstract ""When Eisenhower left office more than twenty years ago, he was generally regarded as the very model of an ineffective president, a benign but politically indecisive leader who reigned but did not rule. Only now, five unsuccessful presidents and a disastrous war later, are we beginning to wonder how this seemingly bumbling and inarticulate man was able to get so much done while appearing to do so little. In The Hidden-Hand Presidency, Fred I. Greenstein, one of the country's leading political scientists, shows that behind Ike's bland 'statesmanlike' exterior there was a distinctive, self-consciously articulated style of leadership. Drawing on recently declassified confidential diaries, letters, and memoranda--including evidence of a secret Eisenhower campaign to terminate Joe McCarthy's political effectiveness--Greenstein shows us an intelligent and articulate leader who knew exactly what he wanted and was prepared to work hard to get it. Time and again, in the way he rallied subordinates and isolated political opponents, in his maneuvers to win support among both isolationalist right wingers and liberal Republicans, Eisenhower proved himself a skilled politician while self-consciously projecting an uncontroversial public image."--Jacket.".

- catalog abstract ""An acknowledged triumph of literary insight, Elizabeth Jenkins' life of Jane Austen has been for many years a favorite portrait of this remarkable woman. At the same time it is an absorbing evocation of social life amongst the country gentry of Georgian England. This is the world of Jane's small circle of friends and her large and affectionate family - the world she depicted so brilliantly in her novels. Elizabeth Jenkins, herself a distinguished novelist, shows how Jane Austen's life in Hampshire, Bath and London was reflected in her novels ; and by drawing on the writer's sparkling correspondence with her sister, on family reminiscences and on the novels themselves, she builds up a sensitive picture of Jane Austen's emotional and creative life. In doing so she shows how her great gifts developed from the early novels to the remarkable achievements of her maturity: Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma and Persuasion." --from back cover.".

- catalog abstract "Belief in the divine origin of the universe began to wane most markedly in the nineteenth century, when scientific accounts of creation by natural law arose to challenge traditional religious doctrines. Most of the credit - or blame - for the victory of naturalism has generally gone to Charles Darwin and the biologists who formulated theories of organic evolution. Darwinism undoubtedly played the major role, but the supporting parts played by naturalistic cosmogonies should also be acknowledged. Chief among these was the nebular hypothesis proposed by Pierre Simon Laplace in 1796, which explained the origin of the solar system as a natural development over extended periods of time. Ronald Numbers focuses on Laplace's theory as it affected American scientific thought. he first traces the history of Laplace's cosmogony chronologically, from its European inception to its demise about 1900. the last three chapters explore some of the theological and scientific consequences resulting from the acceptance of this cosmogony. Most significant was the change in the status of supernatural doctrine. When the nebular hypothesis lost credence at the end of the nineteenth century, those who had before tried to accommodate natural theory with supernatural doctrine no longer felt compelled to do so when faced with succeeding theories. The nebular hypothesis, it seems, had established natural law in the heavens.".

- catalog abstract "First published in 1776, the year in which the American Revolution officially began, Smith's Wealth of Nations sparked a revolution of its own. In it Smith analyzes the major elements of political economy, from market pricing and the division of labor to monetary, tax, trade, and other government policies that affect economic behavior. Throughout he offers seminal arguments for free trade, free markets, and limited government. Criticizing mercantilists who sought to use the state to increase their nations' supply of precious metals, Smith points out that a nation's wealth should be measured by the well-being of its people. Prosperity in turn requires voluntary exchange of goods in a peaceful, well-ordered market. How to establish and maintain such markets? For Smith the answer lay in man's social instincts, which government may encourage by upholding social standards of decency, honesty, and virtue, but which government undermines when it unduly interferes with the intrinsically private functions of production and exchange. Social and economic order arise from the natural desires to better one's (and one's family's) lot and to gain the praise and avoid the censure of one's neighbors and business associates. Individuals behave decently and honestly because it gives them a clear conscience as well as the good reputation necessary for public approbation and sustained, profitable business relations.".

- catalog abstract "This highly original work presents laboratory science in a deliberately skeptical way: as an anthropological approach to the culture of the scientist. Drawing on recent work in literary criticism, the authors study how the social world of the laboratory produces papers and other "texts,"and how the scientific vision of reality becomes that set of statements considered, for the time being, too expensive to change. The book is based on field work done by Bruno Latour in Roger Guillemin's laboratory at the Salk Institute and provides an important link between the sociology of modern sciences and laboratory studies in the history of science. - catalog abstract "Cairo, Illinois, at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, was a city favored by geography and climate. It was founded in the early 1800s on great expectations. Its location at the head of major rivers navigable both summer and winter and its proximity to coal fields generated predictions that Cairo would soon surpass Louisville, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and even Chicago. Yet it failed to realize the success its promoters believed inevitable. Using mainly primary sources such as newspapers, city council records, and census data, Herman R. Lantz has traced the history of the city and has pinpointed the economic, social, and psychological factors that helped to retard Cairo's progress while other cities with the same, or even fewer, advantages flourished. The result is an important socio-historical contribution that attempts to explore the process of community failure in the perspective of national success.".
- catalog abstract "While there is no easy way to define terrorism, it may generally be viewed as a method of violence in which civilians are targeted with the objective of forcing a perceived enemy into submission by creating fear, demoralization, and political friction in the population under attack. At one time a marginal field of study in the social sciences, terrorism is now very much in center stage. The 1970s terrorist attacks by the PLO, the Provisional Irish Republican Army, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Japanese Red Army, the Unabomber, Aum Shinrikyo, Timothy McVeigh, the World Trade Center attacks, the assault on a school in Russia, and suicide bombers have all made the term "terrorism" an all-too-common part of our vocabulary. This edition was originally published in the 1980s, well before some of the horrific events noted above. This monumental collection of definitions, conceptual frameworks, paradigmatic formulations, and bibliographic sources is being reissued in paperback now as a resource for the expanding community of researchers on the subject of terrorism. This is a carefully constructed guide to one of the most urgent issues of the world today.".

- catalog abstract "These books give two quite different perspectives on astronomical instrumentation. Infinite Vistas, based mostly on a series of public lectures, consists of chapters by professional astronomers on major new astronomical instruments under construction, planned, or hoped for. From radio waves to gamma rays, they cover the full range of the electromagnetic spectrum, summarizing recent progress, detailing planned new equipment, and explaining research problems to be resolved in the future. Individual contributions are well written and fit together unusually well to form a coherent treatise. Given the key role of instrumentation in the dramatic progress of 20th-century astronomy, the volume provides an exciting peek at the next two decades. Readers do not need advanced training to enjoy this work, although some prior knowledge of astronomy and physics might be useful. Berry's book contains detailed instructions for amateurs wishing to construct small optical telescopes. It provides photographs and plans for five specific telescopes four reflectors of differing sizes and styles and one refractor. Several other chapters explain telescope construction and general use. The author is an experienced constructor of, and writer on, telescopes.".

In addition to his landmark works on the theories of history and the human sciences, Dilthey made important contributions to hermeneutics and phenomenology, aesthetics, psychology, and the methodology of the social sciences. This volume presents Dilthey's principal writings on aesthetics and the philosophical understanding of poetry, as well as representative essays of literary criticism. The essay "The Imagination of the Poet" (also known as his Poetics) is his most sustained attempt to examine the philosophical bearings of literature in relation to psychological and historical theory. Also included are "The Three Epochs of Modern Aesthetics and its Present Task," "Fragments for a Poetics," and two final essays discussing Goethe and Hḻderlin. The latter are drawn from Das Erlebnis und die Dichtung, a volume that was acclaimed on publication as a classic of literary criticism and that continues to be a model for the geistesgeschichtliche approach to literary history."-- Publisher description.".
- catalog abstract "He was a prominent member of Congress, a brilliant administrator, an advisor to Presidents, an influential political figure in the old conservative style. He embodied the traits of free thinking and independence that are regarded as emblematic of the American character. He was perhaps the last American ambassador to have any major impact on U.S. foreign policy. Yet, as the authors show in their insightful biography, Lewis Douglas spent the final twenty years of his life disillusioned and disenchanted with the direction of American leadership. The authors focus on what was perhaps the most telling of Douglas's roles : his service under President Truman as ambassador to Great Britain from 1947 to 1950. A popular diplomat and a close friend of Winston Churchill, he played a prominent part in the launching of the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Blockade, the creation of Israel, and the forging of the North Atlantic alliance. The last two decades of his life were a time of frustration and unhappiness with both Republican and Democratic administrations, especially in the area of foreign policy. Browder and Smith have chronicled a remarkable career in a book that sheds new light on many historically significant events, and fully portrays the successes and failures, the determination and integrity, the worth, of a truly independent man. --from inside jacket flap.".
- catalog abstract "Interviews hold a prominent place among the various research methods in the social and behavioral sciences. This book presents a powerful critique of current views and techniques, and proposes a new approach to interviewing. At the heart of Mishler's argument is the notion that an interview is a type of discourse, a speech event: it is a joint product, shaped and organized by asking and answering questions. This view may seem self-evident, yet it does not guide most interview research. In the mainstream tradition, the discourse is suppressed. Questions and answers are regarded as analogues to stimuli and responses rather than as forms of speech; questions and the interviewer's behavior are standardized so that all respondents will receive the same "stimulus"; respondents' social and personal contexts of meaning are ignored. While many researchers now recognize that context must be taken into account, the question of how to do so effectively has not been resolved. This important book illustrates how to implement practical alternatives to standard interviewing methods.Drawing on current work in sociolinguistics as well as on his own extensive experience conducting interviews, Mishler shows how interviews can be analyzed and interpreted as narrative accounts. He places interviewing in a sociocultural context and examines the effects on respondents of different types of interviewing practice. The respondents themselves, he believes, should be granted a more extensive role as participants and collaborators in the research process. The book is an elegant work of synthesis--clearly and persuasively written, and supported by concrete examples of both standard interviewing and alternative methods. It will be of interest to both scholars and clinicians in all the various fields for which the interview is an essential tool.".

- catalog abstract ""In this series of related essays, Murray Bookchin balances his ecological and anarchist vision with the promising opportunities of a 'post-scarcity' era. Surpassing the constraints of Marxist political economy--which was rooted in an era of material scarcity and could not forsee the sweeping changes ahead--Bookchin argues that the tools necessary for the self-administration of a complex, industrial societyhave already been developed and have greatly altered our revolutionary landscape. Technological advances were made during the 20th century which expanded production greatly, but in the pursuit of corporate profit and at the expense of human need, workers' control and ecological sustainability. Through direct control on industry, and by incorporating an ecological and utopian vision for society, the working class can now dispell the myth that the state, hierarchical social relations and political parties (vanguards) are necessary to their struggle for freedom. Bookchin's analysis, rooted in the realities of contemporary society, remains refreshingly pragmatic."--Jacket.".
