Viets also served as librarian and curator of the Boston Medical Library (1938-1956). Viets specialized in the disease myasthenia gravis, a muscle debilitation which results in paralysis, and in 1939, he established the first clinic in the world for the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder at MGH.".
