He specialized as a 3" mortar platoon commander and was demobilized after the war with the rank of Lieutenant. In 1947, he joined the Royal Military Police (Ceylon) serving in Singapore and Malaya. The year after he was sent to the British Army School of Infantry at Netheravon and on his return he was promoted to Captain.In 1956, he was promoted to Major and was appointed adjutant of the Ceylon Sinha Regiment and in 1967 as a Lieutenant Colonel became the commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, Ceylon Sinha Regiment. The following year became the commanding officer of the Ceylon Sinha Regiment and left for training in the US.On his return he became a staff officer and in 1974 was promoted to the rank of Colonel. In 1977, he was promoted to Brigadier and was appointed Chief of Staff, he served in this post until his retirement on 18 March 1979. He was the acting Commander of the Army on two occasions and was the last officer from the Ceylon Defence Force to leave active service.For wartime service in World War II, he had earned the Defence Medal and the War Medal 1939–1945, and for service in the Ceylon Army, he received the Ceylon Armed Services Long Service Medal, the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal and the Ceylon Armed Services Inauguration Medal.
