The European Parliament constituencies used under that system were smaller than the later regional constituencies and only had one Member of the European Parliament each. The constituency consisted of the Westminster Parliament constituencies of Bournemouth East, Bournemouth West, Christchurch, New Forest, North Dorset, Poole, Romsey and Waterside and South Dorset.The constituency replaced most of Wessex and parts of Hampshire West. It was itself replaced by much of Dorset and East Devon and parts of Itchen, Test and Avon in 1994.
