On September 18, 1966, Hill was reassigned by operation of law to the United States District Court for the Central District of California. He served as chief judge of that court from 1979 to 1980. He assumed senior status on October 15, 1980, and served in that capacity until his death, in 1998, in Los Angeles, California.. }
