He was born Dec. 5, 1875 in New Hampshire, but was educated in the Midwest, graduating from the University of Nebraska in 1898. He received his medical degree from the same institution in 1910, where he then became an instructor of physiological chemistry. He went on to teach biochemistry, to work as director of laboratories, and to serve as dean of the college of medicine at the University of Nebraska.After a decade in Nebraska, Cutter was appointed the dean of Northwestern University’s medical school and in 1941 was named dean emeritus.
