Born with the surname Middleton, he adopted the surname of his maternal grandfather Laurence Monck of Caenby Hall, Caenby, Lincolnshire who died in 1798.He served as High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1801 and was Member of Parliament for Northumberland 1812–1820.Monck was an avid Hellenist and in 1817, with the assistance of architect John Dobson, he completed the building of an impressive new mansion house in Greek Revival style, Belsay Hall, adjacent to Belsay Castle.He married twice; firstly in 1804 to Louisa Lucia Cook and secondly in 1831 to Mary Elizabeth Bennett. He outlived his son, Charles Atticus Monck (1805–1856), who was born in Athens, and was succeeded by his grandson Arthur.Belsay Castle is a Grade 1 listed building which has been in the custody of English Heritage since c.1980.. }
