Indian coastal police were alerted that two crew members of St. Antony, an Indian fishing trawler, had been killed by gunfire from an oil-tanker. The shooting incident occurred in the Laccadive Sea, within the Indian exclusive economic zone (EEZ) off the coast of Kerala, in southern India. Indian Coast Guard contacted the Enrica Lexie which reversed course and moored in the port of Kochi. On 19 February 2012 two of the 6-member of the Nucleo Militare di Protezione (NPM) on board the Enrica Lexie, Chief Master Sergeant Massimiliano Latorre and Sergeant Salvatore Girone, belonging to the San Marco Regiment of the Italian Navy, were arrested and charged with murder of the two crew members of St. Antony. The maritime incident sparked a diplomatic row between the governments of India and Italy, stemming from a conflict of opinions over legal jurisdiction and functional immunity. The case is currently at a pre-trial stage before the Indian Supreme Court and is scheduled to be heard at a Special Court set-up to deal exclusively with this incident.. }
