It is the southern terminus of the Tonsley railway line, and is located in the southwestern Adelaide suburb of Mitchell Park. It is located 13.0 km by railway from the Adelaide Railway Station. Trains operate between 7am and 7pm on Monday-Friday, with no weekend service. It closed temporarily from February 2012 to facilitate works on the Adelaide Convention Centre expansion. In 2013 a plan was announced to build a second track from Tonsley Junction to Celtic Avenue and a passing loop at Clovelly Park station, as well as a Park and Ride at Clovelly Park station and a bus interchange at Tonsley. This was to be funded through joint State and Federal initiatives, but the incoming Federal Liberal government announced that they would be changing focus to roads, and pulled the funding.The State Government proceeded with the Tonsley Junction to Celtic Avenue duplication, line electrification and the Park and Ride at Clovelly Park station.
