- 50CAN abstract "50CAN (The 50-State Campaign for Achievement Now) is an American think tank and state-level education advocacy group founded in January 2011 and located in New York City, NY. Its stated mission is to recruit and support "local leaders who build citizen movements in their states to ensure that every child has access to a great school." 50CAN currently operates campaigns in seven states: Minnesota (MinnCAN), Maryland (MarylandCAN), New York (NYCAN), Pennsylvania (PennCAN), Rhode Island (RI-CAN), North Carolina (CarolinaCAN) and New Jersey (JerseyCAN). 50CAN grew out of ConnCAN and was incubated inside the Connecticut non-profit in 2010 before being formally spun-off as an independent organization in 2011. Its major projects include education research reports and issue briefs, ranking public schools, parent outreach and education, and legislative advocacy. Campaigns50CAN runs annual state advocacy campaigns with specific policy objectives. These campaigns are organized around specific issues grounded in the organization's three policy principles: greater choices for parents, greater flexibility for educators and greater accountability for results. Policy victories achieved through these campaigns include a large-scale expansion of preschool in Minnesota, the enactment of a teacher evaluation system in Pennsylvania and the opening of an Achievement First public charter school in Rhode Island. Staff and Board50CAN currently has 29 full-time staff led by founder and president Marc Porter Magee, Ph.D. The organization's six member board of directors is led by Jonathan Sackler and includes Dacia Toll (Co-CEO, AchievementFIrst), Delia Pompa (Senior Vice President, Programs for National Council of La Raza),Rebeca Nieves Huffman (State Director, Democrats for Education Reform Illinois), and Richard Barth (CEO & President, KIPP Foundation).".
