According to the testimony of the commanding officer in the battle, reported a man contacted him by phone claiming to be an close affiliate to the ISIS demanding him to surrender the border outpost. The offer was refuted which ultimately led to the deaths of six soldiers and forced the remaining troops to relocate to safety in Iraq, which is pro-Assad. The 64 soldiers, majority of those wounded, were apprehended by Iraqi authorities upon crossing the border. They were disarmed then transported to Baghdad. From Baghdad the soldiers were planned to be relocated to the al-Waleed border crossing held by the Syrian Army from where they would be transferred back. Allegedly an insider on the Iraqi side gave news to the ISIS who organized the ambush ahead of time. On March 4, the convoy of 60 unarmed Syrian troops escorted by 13 Iraqi soldiers left Baghdad for the al-Waleed border crossing in Syria. Mid-way through in the Niveveh province of Iraq, gunmen from both sides of the road detonated roadside bombs and attacked the convoy armed with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. The Iraqi escorts were overwhelmed in minutes. According to a Syrian officer who survived the attack, said the gunmen came from both sides attacking the trucks carrying the Syrians with gunfire. 51 Syrian soldiers were killed, nine were wounded. 9 Iraqi escort soldiers were killed as well. 13 Iraqi soldiers were also killed in the attack.".
