- Anthrax_(American_band) abstract "Anthrax is an American thrash metal band from New York City, New York. Formed in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker, the band has since released ten studio albums, multiple singles, and an EP featuring American hip hop group Public Enemy. Reputed for its energetic live performances, Anthrax was signed to Megaforce Records, which issued the band's debut studio album in 1984. Soon afterwards, Lilker left the band to form Nuclear Assault; he was permanently replaced by then-roadie Frank Bello. With a new lineup, the band recorded its second album, Spreading the Disease (1985), which was distributed by Island Records. Their third album, Among the Living, was released in 1987 and received substantial critical acclaim. Anthrax experienced another lineup change in 1992, when John Bush took Joey Belladonna's position as the band's vocalist. Sound of White Noise was released the following year and peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200. The studio efforts released throughout the 1990s saw the band experimenting with their sound and incorporating influences from other genres. The band line-up has been changed numerous times; following the departure of drummer Dave Weiss and bassist Kenny Kushner, several musicians replaced both band members' roles, though Paul Kahn and Greg Walls were the first to do so. In addition to this aspect, there were multiple vocalists involved in Anthrax, with Neil Turbin, Joey Belladonna and John Bush being among the frontmen of the band. Scott Ian, however, has been in the band since its formation. Ian and Charlie Benante, who joined Anthrax in 1983, are the only constant members that appear on every album. Bassist Frank Bello has played on every album with the exception of the band's debut. Classic singer Joey Belladonna has returned to the band and appears on Worship Music, which is his first studio album with the band since 1990's Persistence of Time.Due to the raucous music on its early releases, the group was raved as one of the leaders of the thrash community from the 1980s. When the movement began to gain a major following, Anthrax were dubbed as one of the "big four" of thrash metal, alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Anthrax has sold 2.5 million records in the United States between 1991 and 2004. Its worldwide sales stood at over 15 million records.".
