- Bissel_truck abstract "A Bissel truck (also: Bissell truck or Bissel bogie) is a very simple and commonly used way of designing a carrying axle on a steam locomotive to enable it to negotiate curves more easily. The design uses a single-axled bogie, usually known as a pony truck, whose pivot is towards the centre of the locomotive. As a result, the Bissell axle is not only able to turn about its vertical axis, but also to swing radially to the side, something which is necessary on steam locomotives because their position on the track is dictated by the driving or coupled wheels. In the portion of the engine's frame that rested on the truck there was a pair of inclined planes, lower at the centre and a matching pair on the frame of the truck. As the truck moved to the side, this lifted the outside of the locomotive, slightly canting it into the curve. It greatly eased the rounding of curves, but the casting and machining of these sloping surfaces was too costly. The Hudson-Bissell truck simplified this by having the engine frame rest on the truck frame through two swing links. Again, as the truck pivoted sideways in a curve, the outside of the locomotive was elevated. This modification of Bissell's design made the truck very practical and it was used right to the end of steam. The [pony] truck can move radially around a real or virtual pivot. When the pivot is situated at a point inside the truck, the truck is called a bogie. What makes it a Bissel bogie is the pivot being placed outside to the rear or fore. The Bissel bogie was invented in 1857 by Levi Bissell. In Mallet locomotives, the forward engine was a special, very large, Bissell truck.[citation needed]".
