- Black_Rock_Arts_Foundation abstract "The mission of the Black Rock Arts Foundation is to support and promote community, interactive art and civic participation. BRAF works with communities in the San Francisco Bay Area and around the world to collaboratively produce innovative, relevant and pioneering works of public art that build community and empower individuals. As of 2012, BRAF has supported more than 100 projects worldwide.HistoryThe Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF) was founded by several of the partners who founded and produce Burning Man, an annual arts festival in the Nevada desert. These founding members are Larry Harvey, Harley K. Dubois, Crimson Rose and Will Roger Peterson. The foundation was formed in May 2001, applied for its 501(c)3 status in July 2001 and received it in November 2001.The Burning Man event, like no other environment in the world, has created a unique venue for art, and has rekindled one of art’s most valuable functions: connecting community members in creation, curiosity, and wonderment. Through their programs, the Black Rock Arts Foundation brings this experience into the cities of the Bay Area and beyond, with the vision that community-driven, inclusive, and interactive art is vital to a thriving culture.ProgramsSince 2001, BRAF has awarded grants to artists and collectives across the country and around the world. BRAF funds highly interactive and community-focused projects that prioritize community involvement in their development, execution and display. Any individual artist, organization or artist collective can apply for a grant. Grants amounts typically range from $2000 to $6,000. Letters of Interest are due in December. BRAF awards grants to about 10 projects each year.2005 saw the birth of BRAF’s Civic Arts Program when Mayor Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco Arts Commission encouraged BRAF to collaborate with the San Francisco’s Hayes Valley community and artist David Best to create an interactive ‘Temple.’ The Hayes Valley Temple quickly became a cherished focal point for the community, providing a beautiful space that inspired connection, dialog and civic pride. The Temple became BRAF's model of how artists, city officials and community members can collaborate to create meaningful work, specific to the needs of their community.ProjectsSince 2005, BRAF has implemented their Civic Arts model, successfully enlisting artists, many recognizable from their work at Burning Man, to create or install their work in public spaces.
