- Bob_Olinger_and_James_Bell abstract "Bob Olinger and James Bell were the two guards for Billy the Kid after his capture. After Pat Garrett, assigned to capture Billy the Kid, got the Kid into custody two guards were assigned for watch. The two guards treated him totally differently with Bell showing him respect and "never, by word or action, did he betray his prejudice if it existed" (Utley). It was understood that Bell had established a sort of mutual respect and liking of the Kid. Olinger, however, treated the Kid very badly. The Kid is quoted saying "He would work me up until I could hardly contain myself" which shows Billy's impatience with him. Olinger would torment the Kid both mentally and physically by beating him or just insulting him constantly. Olinger's favorite weapon and tool of choice when tormenting the Kid was his double-barreled shotgun. He had loaded it with 18 buckshot and was overconfident in his abilities as a guard. He left the prison for lunch, leaving his shotgun, and left the Kid in Bell's care. Billy was able to obtain a gun, either wrestled from Bell or stuck to him (this part is unclear), and shot and killed James Bell. Billy later said that he never wanted to kill him but he stood in his way of escape and it cost him his life. Olinger heard the shot and came running. Billy had taken his time to fetch Olinger's shotgun, position himself at the window overlooking the courtyard, and prepare for Olingers arrival. When Olinger got there he was told that "Bob, the Kid has killed Bell" and Olinger's response to this was "yes, and he's killed me too". At this point Billy empties the shotgun into Olingers chest thus killing him. The site of these killings is preserved in Lincoln County with the hole in the wall where Bell was shot on display as well as a plaque where Billy stood and killed Olinger.".
