- British_Isles_naming_dispute abstract "There is disagreement over the applicability of the term British Isles with relation to Ireland. The term is defined in dictionaries as referring to Great Britain, Ireland and adjacent islands. However, the association between the word "British" and the United Kingdom causes use of the term to be regarded as implying appropriation or overlordship of Ireland by Britain. Alternative terms include "Britain and Ireland", "Atlantic Archipelago", "Anglo-Celtic Isles", the "British-Irish Isles" and the Islands of the North Atlantic. In documents drawn up jointly between the British and Irish governments, the archipelago is referred to simply as "these islands".To some, the dispute is partly semantic; the term is a value-free geographic one while, to others, it is a value-laden political one. The UK dependencies of the Channel Islands, positioned off the coast of French Normandy, are included in the term despite not being regarded as physically a part of the archipelago. Early variants of the term date back to Ancient Greek times; it fell into disuse for over a millennium, and was introduced into English in the late 16th or early 17th centuries by English and Welsh writers whose writings have been described as propaganda and politicised. The term became more resisted when both islands ceased to be part of the same political entity in 1922.The island of Ireland is currently occupied by two states. The Republic of Ireland occupies five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, occupies the remaining one-sixth. The respective names of the two states — "Ireland" and the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" — were themselves the subject of a long dispute between the Irish and British governments.".
