- Brna abstract "Brna is a village on the southern shores of the island of Korčula in Croatia, close to the village of Smokvica, as well as Prižba and Priscapac. Korcula is part of the Dalmatian coast and it belongs to the Dubrovnik-Neretva county.Four kilometres south-west from the town of Smokvica, on the south of the island of Korčula, there is the locality of Brna, situated in the very beautiful Bay of Brna. The peninsula Mali Zaglav, separates the Bay of Brna from the Bay of Istruga on the west side, whereas on the south-east direction, towards the village of Zavalatica, there are numerous small beaches with a crystal blue sea, surrounded by evergreen forests.Brna used to be a non-urbanized bay with only couple of small houses used by local fishermen, where people from Smokvica would go to overnight before long fishing days. Brna developed in the 19th century when, during Austro-Hungarian Empire, a pier was built to be used as a port for the village of Smokvica for export of local wine. Since early 1970s, Brna has become a place where people from Smokvica built their summer houses close to the sea. Since then, Brna has slowly become a village of its own, with rows of detached houses, and flats and apartments for rental to tourists and visitors. As Brna is a very deep bay, it is popular with sailors as their overnight anchorage spot, as it is well sheltered from dangerous winds. At the shallow part of the bay there is a small pebble beach called "Zal", next to which are couple of large and old pine trees with huge branches that provide a comfortable shade on a hot summer's day. Brna has two main jetties: the larger one called "Veliki Mol" and smaller one called "Mali Mol" (meaning Large and Small Dock). These jetties are used for mooring of larger vessels, while smaller boats moor all around the bay. There are few cafes and restaurants in Brna that serve fresh food and local wine. To the northwest is Bay of Istruga, with a popular sandy beach known for its therapeutic mud.It takes about 1/2 hrs drive from the town of Korcula to Brna. There is also a regular bus service from Korcula and Vela Luka that passes through Smokvica.".
