Pope was president of the Episcopal Synod of America, now Forward in Faith North America, from 1989 to 1993.Pope retired as diocesan bishop on December 31, 1994, and was received into the Roman Catholic Church by Cardinal Bernard Law on February 1, 1995. He subsequently returned to the Episcopal Church in the United States of America, but was again received into the Roman Catholic Church in 2007.".
