- Connie_Szerszen abstract "Connie Szerszen is an American female radio personality, currently heard on www.ChicagoRadioOnLine.com, hosting the Classic Hits Channel with legendary DJ Fred Winston. Szerszen is a native Chicagoan of Polish ancestry. While she was Talent Coordinator at WCFL, Szerszen was discovered by air personality Penny Lane. Having never met, "Den Pal Penny Lane" called WCFL one day, and soon talked Szerszen into trying out for a show at WSDM-FM where she eventually DJ'd the Saturday morning show at the studios on 35th & Kedzie, starting in October of 1969. Although she had done promos for WCFL, known as "The Girl From Ten" and maintaining "The Connie Line" (phone-line information on clubs and bands appearing in town.) But the beginning of Szerszen's broadcast career was at WSDM-FM. Her radio name was Den Pal Dawn; she eventually did the morning show (6 AM to 10 AM) before leaving for WIND (AM).On Christmas Day, December 25, 1971, Connie DJ'd her very first show at WIND. This was heralded by Norman Mark in THE DAILY NEWS and by Pulitzer Prize winner, Ron Powers, in THE CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. In March 1974, the Westinghouse Broadcasting Press Release announced Szerszen as the "first female to have her own show on AM radio, prime time in a major market." Prior to that, women were heard in news and talk, and as sidekicks to men, but Connie became the first prime time female rock jock in one of the three major markets (Chicago, New York, L.A.). That was 6-10 PM as a deejay on WIND (AM) in Chicago, a popular AM station then owned by Westinghouse Broadcasting, a/k/a Group W. Szerszen was entered into the U.S. Congressional Record for that achievement. She appeared on the cover of The Chicago Sun-Times Midwest Magazine tagged as "The Woman Who Invented Strip Radio." She also created "Radio-Grams" and personally delivered one to Elvis in May of 1977 at the Arlington Hilton, a suburb of Chicago. Edwina Moore of CBS-2 in Chicago, did a feature story on Connie's show for the CBS-2's 5 PM Newscast with Bill Kurtis on May 7, 1976. Szerszen was also an on-air personality for several other Chicago stations, including WJMK (where she hosted '70s Saturday Night, which ARB rated #1 on Saturday nights in Chicago in the 25-54 demographics), WJEZ, WJJD, and WUSN "US-99." She appeared on local TV shows (i.e., Dave Baum Show, Chet Gulinski Show) and guest-hosted WCIU-TV's Kiddie-A-Go-Go '' on various dates in 1970, (which WCFL's DJ Barney Pip also hosted. Connie continues a mobile DJ business for weddings, parties and charitable events such as RRAF in Elmhurst, IL and maintains a website -- www.TopRockGirlyJock.comIn the '80s, ABC-7 called Connie out of the blue for a possible hostess position for a new daytime talk show. ABC-7's Program Manager, Jeff McGrath, said they were also talking to a woman from out of town--named Oprah Winfrey. Oprah won out over Connie. On August 12, 2005, WJMK HD2 became the first station in America to broadcast live on an all-digital radio station; the next night, Szerszen's 70's Saturday Night began on the station, and she became the 1st female in America to broadcast "live" on an all-digital radio station. (www.AllAccess.com, August 2010)She is known to her listeners as the Top Rock Girly Jock and Polish Princess and ends her shows with "Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła", the first line of the Polish national anthem.Connie's memoir, TOP ROCK GIRLY JOCK--A CHICAGO RADIO FIRST! was featured on the WGN-TV's MID-DAY NEWS with Steve Sanders, ABC-7's CHICAGO CLOSE-UP with Janet Davies, and is available at www.TopRockGirlyJock.com as well as Amazon and other on-line booksellers. In addition, Szerszen is a portrait artist. Szerszen's portraits of donors hang in the main entrance at St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and in the Karen Yontz Women's Cardiac Awareness Centers in Milwaukee and West Allis, Wisconsin. Her works also hang at The Oconomowoc Hospital's Cancer Center; St. Mary of Nazareth in Chicago; Inverness Golf Club; Holy Family Parish, Inverness, Illinois; and the Village Hall in Roselle, Illinois. She continues to do works for private and corporate clients, such as USG Corporationwhere prints of her portraits are displayed at AWCI, West Falls, Virginia. In February 2006, Crain's Chicago Business did a feature story on her portraiture, displaying her portrait of the wife of an ad agency's CEO.Szerszen has attended School of the Art Institute of Chicago, American Academy of Art, Northwestern University and The Palette & Chisel in Chicago and The Studio of Long Grove, IL. She briefly taught watercolor at Friendship Village, Schaumburg, IL in February, 2010.[citation needed] Connie continues accepting portrait commissions as her schedule allows; her works can be viewed at www.PortraitArtChicago.com".
