The region is rich in minerals, especially gypsum and marble.Crato has its Roman Catholic Diocese which has contributed for the educational system of the region with good schools such as Colégio Diocesano do Crato, Colégio Santa Teresa de Jesus, Colégio Pequeno Príncipe and The Catholic Philosophy College. There are many other good schools. The main campus of URCA (Universidade Regional do Cariri) is located here. The city is surrounded by a tropical wood in the Araripe basin (Serra do Araripe) near the border of the state of Pernambuco. the climate is generally mild, with somewhat more rain than is typical of the region.".
