- Demerara_rebellion_of_1823 abstract "The Demerara rebellion of 1823 was an uprising involving more than 10,000 slaves that took place in the former Crown colony of Demerara-Essequibo (now part of Guyana). The rebellion was instigated chiefly by Jack Gladstone, a slave at "Success" plantation. It also involved his father, Quamina, and other senior members of their church group, including its English pastor, John Smith. The rebellion resulted in the deaths of many slaves; estimates of the toll range from 100 to 250. It was brutally crushed by the colonists under then-governor John Murray – 45 death sentences were passed, of which 27 were carried out; their bodies were displayed in public for months afterwards. In particular, the death of a British parson on death row had a strong impact on Britain. It strengthened the abolitionists' movement to emancipate slaves after the slave trade was banned by enactment of the Slave Trade Act 1807. The deportation of Jack Gladstone after the rebellion helped bring attention to the plight of sugar plantation slaves, accelerating the abolition of slavery. Quamina, whom it was thought was the actual leader of the rebellion, was declared a national hero after Guyana's independence, with streets and monuments dedicated to him in the capital of Georgetown, Guyana.".
