- Douglas_Valder_Duff abstract "Douglas Valder Duff DSC (b. Rosario de Santa Fe, Argentina, 1901; d. Dorchester, England, 23 September 1978) was a British merchant seaman, police officer, and author of over 100 books, including memoirs and books for children.Douglas was the eldest son of Arthur Joseph Duff, then British Consul in Rosario, and Florence Valder.He served in the Merchant Navy in World War I. On 26 March 1917, the freighter Thracia, with a cargo of 4,000 tons of iron ore was sunk by a German U-boat. Midshipman Duff, aged 16, was the only survivor of a crew of 37. Seventeen months later he was a member of the crew of the passenger ship Flavia carrying American nurses and Serbian cavalrymen serving in the American army. It was also torpedoed and sunk. Only one passenger was drowned but several hundred horse were lost. Whilst alone in the water following the sinking of the Thracia he promised he would become a monk. Following the end of the war he entered a monastery near Spalding, Lincolnshire, as Brother Lawrence. After two years he left to serve as an auxiliary policeman in the notorious "Black and Tans" during the Irish War of Independence of 1920 to 1922. In one of his books he claims to have confronted Michael Collins in a Dublin street.".
