- Dr._Bernard_Collins abstract "Dr. Bernard "Bernie" Collins (7 December 1944 - 16 September 2005) is a world martial arts hall of fame member whom founded the Karenzukai Association and taught Okuno-ryu. He was a security expert with NASA and awarded special recognitions for heroism during a company accident by a United States Senator.Born to Leroy and Delia Collins in Jacksonville, Florida, Collins was the third of six children. After graduating from Northwestern H.S. in 1962, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Okinawa, Japan. He earned a Black Belt while stationed there. When he returned to Florida, he obtained a position at the Kennedy Space Center. He was a manager and personal escort for numerous politicians and dignitaries. Dr. Collins also received a special recognition from President Bill Clinton for his contribution to the sport of Karate.Collins opened three karate schools – two in Cocoa, Florida and one in Titusville, Florida, where he created and developed his own style of karate; Okuno-ryu. Dr. Collins was credited with saving the lives of 17 people and received the NASA Award for Bravery. Dr. Collins also received recognition for this event from NASA Director of Public Affairs, Hugh Harris; as well as United States Senator Patty Murray. Bernard moved to Los Angeles, California briefly, worked for the Northrop Corporation and later with the Boeing Company in Seattle, Washington.In 2000, Bernard was inducted into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Dr. Collins continued to train, educate and mentor students from all over the U.S. until the day of his passing. Included pall bearers at the funeral were Timothy Bunch; Rob Coe; Jonny Crawford; Jackie Mole; James Stoddard; Richard Taver.Collins was quoted in a book by Author Alex Levin and the now head of the Karenzukai Association, illustrator James Stoddard as follows:"Wicked fun wisdom for the karate kid in all of us. ...a martial arts book unlike any other." -- Dr. Bernard Collins, 10th dan, head instructor, Karenzukai Martial Arts Association".
