- Drew_Beattie abstract "Drew Beattie (born 1952 Atlanta, Georgia) is an American painter and sculptor whose later work is characterized by post-kitsch material choices and whose earlier work was part of the collaborative team Beattie & Davidson. David Humphrey wrote that “in the summer of 1989 Drew Beattie and Daniel Davidson decided to try making paintings together...impressed with the results they continued working together in a...private laboratory." Beattie's work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, including Leo Castelli Gallery, The Drawing Center, the Brooklyn Museum, the Berkley Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and many others. Beattie is represented by the gallery Hansel and Gretel Picture Garden in New York. After graduating from the Museum School in Boston in 1978, Beattie's work appeared in numerous exhibitions, including many institutional exhibitions in California and in then emerging galleries in New York. In 1989 Beattie met the painter Daniel Davidson at Berkley, while pursuing a teaching post. The pair was known for having a "single imagination" and a highly prolific, laboratory or factory-like experimental practice. After a residency at the American Academy in Rome, for which institution Beattie would eventually become the president of the Society of Fellows, the pair gained representation with Joseph Helman Gallery on 57th Street in New York.By the late nineties, the Beattie-Davidson collaboration ended, Beattie wishing to pursue his more experimental practices and Davidson stepping away from the practice entirely. Beattie's work would assume an altogether different tenor. Grids and hexagonal patterns of colored shapes began to disappear from his paintings. There was also a gradual transition into a highly dimensional painting practice and a post-kitch sculptural practice which have been the subject of many reviews and acclaim. Since Beattie's intensified solo practice, he has had posts at many of the major art programs in the United States including at Harvard, UC Berkley, the University of Chicago, Cooper Union, and Hunter College.Beattie's recent presentations at Hansel and Gretel Picture Garden including stair Z and My Cookie were the first exhibitions in which Beattie's sculpture appeared publicly.".
