Originally a boys' boarding school, it has now been a co-educational boarding and day school for over fifty years. The Trustees today are largely drawn from the Board of Management includes parents and teachers.Until 1976, the school was located in Drogheda town centre, beside St. Laurence's Gate, but now enjoys an eighteen-acre rural setting three kilometres outside the town, along the south bank of the River Boyne. The campus consists of a beautiful Regency house flanked by woodland, with modern classroom and dormitory buildings and extensive playing fields to its rear. The school has a compulsory Transition Year, during which students have the opportunity to try subjects not normally taught at secondary level and open them up to new career options. There are also several outings to different countries at various times, with the biannual "Ski-Trip" being one of the most popular. Recently there was an expedition to the Rome and Sorrento areas for the Classical Studies classes, which brought them to Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii, the Flavian amphitheatre and the Roman forum.Drogheda Grammar School participates in many competitions throughout Ireland, as well as supporting many extra-curricular activities such as the annual "Christmas Concert" and "Black and White Night".As well as its "once-a-year" activities, the school also allows students to undertake projects and hobbies on a regular basis (for example; car restoration, science club, badminton). The school also recently had a new gym built in 2005. It is used often by the pupils and also by local primary school that is situated on the school's premises.
