- Duncan_Weller abstract "Duncan Weller is a writer and illustrator of his own children’s picture books. He is also a writer of adult short stories, poetry, and currently completing a young adult novel. He won two of Canada’s top awards, the Governor General's Award and the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Award, for his third picture book, The Boy from the Sun. After a seven year absence from the children's book scene, Duncan is returning in 2013 with three children's picture books. His sixth and latest picture book will arrive in October. It is called The Ugg and the Drip and follows Big Electric Cat, and The Love Ant, also printed in 2013. His latest work for adults is Rocket Fish, a book of short stories. As a visual artist Duncan works in a variety of mediums incorporating both themes for adults and children, which he exhibits regularly. For a future book, Tiger Dream, about a tiger who escapes from a zoo in North America, he traveled to Ghana for a month in 2012 to research trickster stories and the slave trade. This trip was funded by a Chalmers Arts Fellowship. Disgruntled with his publisher, Simply Read Books, Duncan obtained the rights to his three previous children's picture books, Spacesnake, Night Wall, and The Boy from the Sun. These books and five more are now available on his eBookstore as PDFs. These books and several more that will appear in the next two years constitute twenty years of work. Duncan has become a self-published author, taking on the role of designer and promoter.Weller was born in Lennoxville, Quebec in 1965 to young British immigrants. His father, Geoffrey Weller, became a professor of political studies at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Geoffrey’s work in administration and comparative studies of the political, economic, and health care systems of the Northern hemisphere helped in securing Geoffrey’s position as the founding president of the University of Northern British Columbia in 1991, which at the time, UNBC was the first university to be built in Canada in twenty-five years. Geoffrey Weller served two terms as president before succumbing to lung cancer in 2000. Duncan’s mother, Jean Weller is an award winning quilter who shows her work regularly, and has exhibited in the United States, Norway, and across Canada. Duncan has two brothers: Eric, who teaches and makes films, and Alexander, who operates a retail outlet for martial/fantasy themed arts equipment. After graduating from Lakehead University having studied English Literature and Fine Art, Duncan moved from Thunder Bay to Toronto, then to Victoria, North Vancouver, Montreal and back to Thunder Bay where he held various jobs before winning the Governor General’s Award and securing several grants from the Ontario Arts Council to continue work on his paintings, animation, picture books for children. Duncan’s first book, Spacesnake was written and illustrated when he was nineteen years of age. Shortly thereafter he conceived of several other picture books including The Boy from the Sun which he began illustrating at the age of twenty-two, but did not complete until thirteen years later, explaining that he was waiting to be inspired with an appropriate ending. Many of the individual illustrations for Duncan’s books require two months of full-time work.Due to rapid changes in the publishing industry Duncan has withheld his work from publication, avoiding Canadian publishers, who have a long history of mistreating their writers and illustrators. As a self-published author he controls all rights to his works, and will be working to sell rights to foreign publishers for limited distribution, as he has done with a Swedish publisher who will distribute his work throughout Scandinavia.".
