- Equality_feminism abstract "Equality feminism is a submovement of feminism. It is fundamentally at odds with difference feminism and expresses the crucial similarities between the male and female sexes.Mary Wollstonecraft, in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) claimed that women should enjoy the same legal and political rights as men on the grounds that they are human beings. Similarly, in The Subjection of Women (1869), John Stuart Mill advocated that society ought to be arranged according to reason and that 'accident of birth' is irrelevant. The book A Vindication of the Rights of Woman by Mary Wollstonecraft echoed multiple ideas that were brought out during the French Revolution, and attempted to connect them to problems experienced by women at the time. Throughout her book, Mary Wollstonecraft argued about education, women's rights and produced a proverbial roadmap in order for future women to follow in terms of activism and feminist theorizing. Mary Wollstonecraft also argued views of marriage, and that they were simply for property based matters. Women of the time of the French Revolution did not have rights that could make them independent, and mainly stayed in their marriages, not only for mutual support, but for economic security as well. Mary Wollstonecraft believed that this took a toll on romantic relationships, and made marriages solely about financial and economic security for a woman. Mary Wollstonecraft inspired many future feminists to pin point the problems of women's oppression in patriarchy throughout society.Equality feminists believe that both men and women, while biologically and anatomically different, enter the world with the genetic inheritance of a mother and a father and from that respect, human nature is androgynous, neutral, and equal.Feminism is often reluctantly linked to social justice because of the negative connotations brought to the subject. These are ideas brought by society that a feminist is a loud, protesting, narrow-minded woman who only wants rights for women, which in fact, is not true. Feminism works for the rights of both sexes. For these reasons people often don't know what to identify as being a feminist and many women in fact do not want to, in fear of it being a negative feature. Feminists can be seen as women who hate men, but this may give the illusion that there is only one side to feminism. In fact, feminism comes in many forms and has been around for decades. Women have been fighting and protesting for equal rights since the beginning of the 19th century, and have in fact been quite successful in creating social change. In today's society, both sexes take advantage of things that seem to be 'human rights' or as expected to come with citizenship. Take voting for example. It comes with citizenship, right? Yes and no. Women, or better yet, feminists, have fought for the right to vote about 100 years ago. It is because of feminism that women are able to vote freely, as the act of voting for women was passed in 1918. Women's rights movements occurred alongside other movements in society of the time. For example, women's rights emerged at the same time as slavery was being abolished. An even earlier and more recent social movement was the LGBTQ (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer) rights movement.".
