- Gholam_Serwar_Nasher abstract "Ghulam Sarwar Nashir (1922–1984), an ethnic Pashtun, stepson and nephew of Sher Khan Nashir, was the President of Spinzar Cotton Company in Kunduz, Afghanistan. Hereditary Khan of the Kharoti (Ghilzai) tribe, he became head of the Spinzar Cotton Company with factories all over northern Afghanistan, providing free housing for the employees, hospital, the only girls school in that city, sport clubs and hotels under the Spinzar brand.Through his efforts, Kunduz become one of the richest provinces of the pre-war country. He founded the Nashir Library and Museum, cinema and theater. He was an avid hunter, photographer, art collector and philanthropist.Ghulam Sarwar Nashir, last ruling Kharoti Khan, born in Ghazni in 1921, became President of the Spinzar cotton Company. The first and only cotton company in Afghanistan. Under him Kunduz became the richest Afghan province. Ghulam Serwar Nashir led a remarkable life between east and west, between tribal traditions and a cosmopolitan lifestyle. The ruling of his Khanat was exemplary, as it was a balance between traditional authoritarian regency and modern life style. The Oxford-professor Peter Levi called it - not without some irony - "enlightened despotism" (in his book "In the Light Garden of the Angel King"). Nashir turned Kunduz into a world renown cotton provider. He brought electricity to Kunduz among other developments. The Spinzar Cotton Company had over 20,000 employees living in Spinzar houses for free with the Spinzar sport Clubs providing tennis courts and swimming pools for them. For the first time in Kunduz women were employed at the Spinzar company. This was totally unique in the eastern hemisphere during the sixties and seventies. Sarwar Nashir helped to preserve the cultural heritage of the region of northern Afghanistan. He supported the French archaeologist Schlumberger to find the Kunduz-treasure, which is proof of the legendary Greco-bactric empire which existed in around 300 B.C. The treasure was displayed at the Nashir Museum. Nashir hosted many crowned and uncrowned heads of states, who he treated according to lavish Pashtun hospitality. He was awarded many honors, among the them "The Order of the Sacred Treasure" by his Majesty, the Emperor of Japan, in 1971.Imprisoned by the communist government of President Daoud as a political prisoner in 1973 because Nashir was anti-communist, then in self-exile in the United Kingdom and Germany. Died in Germany in 1984 at the age of 62 due to heart disease developed in prison. He survived by two wives and nine children. He didn't live long enough to see the downfall of communists that destroyed Afghanistan.".
