- Isleño_American abstract "Isleño Americans are Americans who descended from Spanish settlers originally from the Canary Islands emigrated to the Spanish colonies of Southern United States in the 18th century. Colloquially the term can also be used to refer to any Canarian person with U.S. citizenship and his descendants in the U.S. This term is to be distinguished from the term "Isleños", which refers to people of Canarian descent now living in any country of the Americas without distinction. The Isleño Americans are basically European (politically), North African (geographically) and Hispanic and Latino (linguistically) Americans and are of European (Iberian and French - including Cajuns- mainly) and Guanche (Berber North Africans) descent. The Isleños make up several communities, formed by thousands of people, established in San Antonio (Texas) and Louisiana, to which are added other Canarian communities of most recent migration (preferably in Miami). This communities constitute a distinct group within the American population, having preserved the culture of their ancestors until now. Linguistically, most of Isleño Americans speak English, French (in Valenzuela, Louisiana) and Nahuatl (in Galveztown, Louisiana), but some people in Isleño American communities still speak the Spanish language of their ancestors. In particular, members of the Isleño community of Saint Bernard Parish, Louisiana, being geographically isolated, have managed to preserve not only their culture (as the Isleños of San Antonio) but, until recently, the Canarian dialect spoken in the Canary Island in the 18th century (currently spoken by only a few Isleños of over 80 years old in that community, because today most them only speak English, although some Isleños of the community learned Spanish). The success that Isleño Americans have had in their struggle to preserve their culture has led some historians and anthropologists such as Jose Manuel Balbuena Castellano to consider to the Isleño American communities a national heritage of both of the U.S. and the Canary Islands.".
