He wrote his doctoral dissertation on the 1952 presidential campaign. While researching the dissertation he traveled to archives around the United States and examined the personal papers of many of the politicians who participated in the campaign. Major collections he utilized included the papers of Dwight D. Eisenhower and Robert Taft, the two main Republican contenders for the nomination, and the papers of Adlai Stevenson and John J. Sparkman, the Democratic presidential and vice presidential candidates. Greene completed the dissertation in 1983. He then rewrote portions of the manuscript and it was published in book form in late 1985 by University Press of America, under the title The Crusade: The Presidential Election of 1952. Since then he has written several books, as noted above.".
