- Jonathan_Lucas_House abstract "The Jonathan Lucas House, at 286 Calhoun St., Charleston, South Carolina was built between 1803 and 1809, in the Adamesque style of architecture then popular in Charleston.Jonathan Lucas, Jr., the builder of the house, was born in England in and developed milling machines for rice, which led to a boom in rice planting in South Carolina. His father and son, both also named Jonathan, were also prominent lowcountry mill builders and rice planters. Jonathan, Jr. bought 83 1/2 acres (including 80 acres of marshlands) from Daniel Cannon in the area then known as Cannonsborough. In 1807, he was living in Cannonsborough, although not necessarily at 286 Calhoun Street. Two years later, however the Charleston directory listed his address as Boundary St. (the former name of Calhoun St.).The stuccoed brick house is especially noted for it main doorway, the central staircase, and its woodwork, and plasterwork. The house served as the main family residence and as headquarters for a complex of rice and lumber mills which the family operated. The three-story house is five bays wide and four bays deep with a low hip roof concealed by a parapet. The main portion of the house has a heavy cornice with foliated modillions and a frieze with dentils. The front is dominated by a two-story piazza with fluted Doric columns on the basement and first levels and fluted Ionic columns on the second level; balustrades with urn-shaped balusters on the first and second levels, and cornices with dentils on the first and second levels. A double flight of marble steps, with iron railings and a rusticated masonry base, ascends to the first piazza level. The house was listed in the National Register February 23, 1978.The National Historic Landmark house Hopsewee on the Santee River was also owned by family members, being purchased by John Hume Lucas in 1844.".
