During the 1910s was friend with other satirists, namely Josef Lada and Jaroslav Hašek. In the First Republic of Czechoslovakia Skružný was a popular author of dramatic and satiric novels, many of which were filmed. He named his villa in Zbraslav (Prague) "Venoušek a Stázička", after one of his most successful works. Elmar Klos, nephew of Skružný, cooperated on several movie scripts. Josef Skružný was a fierce anticommunist and supported and cooperated with Germans during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. One of his sons, Roman Skružný (1932–2004), became a known neo-nazi activist.".
