After graduating from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Kuhn made her professional stage debut in 1981 and her Broadway debut in 1985, in the original production of the musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood. She has also participated in several cast recordings and sang the song "Colors of the Wind" on the hit soundtrack of the 1995 film Pocahontas, which won its composers the Academy Award for Best Original Song.".
