- La_Manche,_Newfoundland_and_Labrador abstract "La Manche was a coastal community in the southeast portion (the Avalon Peninsula) of the island of Newfoundland between Cape Broyle and Burnt Cove. Prior to being settled, La Manche served as seasonal fishing grounds for fishermen from Newfoundland, England and France. The community was first settled in the 1840s by George Melvin. The community of La Manche was inhabited by the Melvin family with the exception of one family of Cranes. There was a small church located in the community, which was served regularly by the Roman Catholic priest who resided in the neighboring harbours. In the earliest census information dated to 1845 there were about 34 inhabitants in La Manche, 5 of those 34 having been born in England. The Post Office was established in 1892 and the first Postmaster was George Rose.La Manche was abandoned after a major winter storm on January 28, 1966 which wiped away a large portion of the community. It is now within La Manche Provincial Park.".
