- Maktab abstract "Maktab (Arabic: مكتب) or Maktabeh (Arabic: مكتبة) or Maktabkhaneh (Persian: مكتب، مکتبخانه) (other transliterations include makteb, mekteb, mektep, meqteb, maqtab), also called Al Kottab (Arabic: الكتَّاب Kottāb ) (Arabic: “school”), is an Arabic word meaning elementary schools. Though it was primarily used for teaching children in reading, writing, grammar and Islamic subjects (such as Qur'an recitations), other practical and theoretical subjects were also often taught. Until the 20th century, maktabs were the only means of mass education in much of the Islamic world. While in Arabic, Maktab refers to only elementary school, the word Maktab is also used in Persian language in Afghanistan and is an equivalent term to school, comprising both the primary and secondary schooling. Ibn Sina also used the word Matkab in the same sense.Maktab or Al Kottab is an old-fashioned method of education in Egypt and Muslim majority countries, in which a sheikh teaches a group of students who sit in front of him on the ground. The curriculum includes Islam and Koranic Arabic, but focused mainly on memorising the Koran. With the development of modern schools, the number of Kottabs has declined.Kottab means writers, is also transliterated as Kuttāb, plural of it is katatīb / Katātīb (كتاتيب). Origins of it refer to old centuries. However, in common modern Arabic usage, Maktab (Arabic: مكتب) is a reference to the English word for Office while Maktabeh (Arabic: مكتبة) is a reference to the English word for Library or (place of) Study. Also, Al Kottab (Arabic: الكتَّاب) is a reference to the English word for The Book or Books.".
