- Margaret_Breckinridge abstract "Margaret Elizabeth Breckinridge (1832-1864) was a nurse and Sanitary Commission agent for the Union Army during the American civil war. She was the daughter of Reverend John Breckinridge and Sunday school teacher Margaret M. Breckinridge. Before becoming a nurse, she packed supplies for soldiers and wrote letters and articles, such as "A Word about the War" for the Princeton Standard, in an effort to bring to light the pressing needs of soldiers and call upon what she saw as the duty of women in war time.Breckinridge served with Ulysses Grant's soldiers in the Western U.S. from 1862 until 1864, beginning in April 1862. She began nursing soldiers in Baltimore for a short time before moving to Lexington, Kentucky, arriving just before the invasion of General Kirby Smith's army. A few weeks after the Confederate army lost possession of the town, Breckinridge went to St. Louis, where she worked in the hospitals of the Jefferson Barracks. She also served as a nurse on two voyages from St. Louis on the Mississippi river; on one of those voyages, the boat she was traveling on was overtaken by Confederate troops, who used it to attack and destroy a pair of Union supply ships. Her service and the fact that her cousin was John C. Breckinridge caused her exploits to appear in many newspapers throughout the North. She became ill and went home in 1863, intending to eventually return to the hospital boats. She later trained as a surgical nurse in Philadelphia's Episcopal Hospital. However, upon hearing that her brother-in-law, Colonel Peter A. Porter, had been killed in battle, she went back to be with her family, a trip which proved too much for her health. She died shortly after arriving in Niagara Falls on July 27, 1864. Her exact illness is unknown, although it is believed that she contracted a communicable disease while caring for the troops.".
