He was a late developer and was only an average player for his age until he shot up in strength in the early 1980s. He was awarded the International Master title in 1982. He won the World Junior Chess Championship in 1985. Dlugy answered the ad and was hired and got a job working on Wall Street. Eventually, he became a principal of the Russian Growth Fund, a hedge fund. Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov was formerly associated with Dlugy's Russian Growth Fund.In March 2006, Dlugy received a special invitation to play in the U.S. Chess Championship in San Diego, California, even though he had not qualified for the event. He achieved a plus score.".
