Buildings surrounding the square include the Metropolitan Cathedral, Palacio Nacional, where the President's office is located, and the Mexico City Town Hall. The station opened on 14 September 1970.Zócalo station has an information desk and a cultural display. It connects with the Metro Pino Suárez station at the south side through a long underground passage, called Pasaje Zócalo–Pino Suárez.
