- Nicholas_A._Kotov abstract "Nicholas A. Kotov, FRSC (born August 29, 1965, Moscow, USSR), is the Joseph B. and Florence V. Cejka Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. He is best known for his work on the self-assembly of nanomaterials and layer-by-layer assembly (LbL) of advanced composites. His recent research has included work on implantable neuroprosthetic devices and three-dimensional cell scaffolds.Since 1992 many of his research projects have focused on the biomimetic self-organization of nanomaterials. He demonstrated that nanoparticles can spontaneously self-organize into chains, sheets, twisted ribbons and other extended mesoscale structures. Their geometry is determined by the anisotropy of pair-potentials of nanoparticles and can approach complex assemblies reminiscent of those observed previously for proteins. Supraparticles self-assembled from several hundred individual nanoparticles exemplify terminal self-assembled structures that can be related to other terminal assemblies such as micelles, vesicles, and virus capsids. Unlike their extended mesoscale counterparts their size and geometry is determined by the local equilibrium state originating from the balance of repulsive and attractive interactions. The generic nature of such interactions makes possible a large variety of terminal supraparticle structures that may include different organic and inorganic components.Kotov and coworkers also investigated mechanical properties of LbL multilayers from nanoparticles of clay and other materials. They found these composites replicate properties of nacre - a unique natural composite material. The uniform orientation and small size of nanoparticles also makes the LbL stacks transparent, which enables one to combine their mechanical properties with transparency. Recent studies of the mechanical properties of LBL-assembled films also provided an example of self-organization of nanoparticles in the solid state.".
