- Peroor abstract "Peroor is a village in the Kottayam district of Kerala, India. Reaching Peroor from Kottayam is through Samkrathi junction or any right turns from MC road between Samkranthy and Ettumanoor. Ettumanoor is 3km away from Peroor. There is more than five settlement colonies in Peroor. Peroor Service Co-op bank and State Bank Of India are the local banks. All major kerala religious communities are present here. Hindu, Christian, Muslim are living here. In Christian CSI, Jacobite and Catholics are the major groups. In that Knanaya Catholic is the wealthiest community even though they are very few.In Hindu Nair and Ezhava are the powerful community. Muslims are comparatively newcomers to this area. A Muslim colony was established here during 1998-99 adjacent to MHC and Kariyattappuzha Colony.Dalits are the other major population here. Like other urban areas of kerala, here also dalits lead a middle-class life. They are much educated and cultured here. Even though other communities keep an untouchability inside their mind these people always seems compromising to their circumstances. Hence all endeavours to enhance this community went futile.Famous places in Peroor include St.Sebastian Church, Marthasmooni's Church, Peroor Kavu(temple), Chalakkal Temple and Arayiram temple. The famous ettumanooor aarattu is performed here. The majority of people are make their daily bread by doing construction related works. ODESA ( Organization for Dalit Empowerment and Social Activation) is situated in peroor. The River Meenachil flows through the eastern part of Peroor. The Bhadrakali temple in this village is called Peroorkavu. There is a Christian seminary at Mannamala, a hilltop in Peroor. It is believed that the tribal community "mannan" settled there. Later this Mannamala was in custody of the Vellappally family and they donated their 96-acres to the monastery.Kandanchirakkavala (Kandanchira junction) is considering as the centre of Peroor. The name "kandanchira" came from an incident happened decades back. There is a part of the vast 'Mundakappadam" (mundakan paddy field) in that locale and there is a 'chira' (small, mud/sand check-dam) to prevent the rain water from Mannamala and other nearby areas, which may destroy the paddy cultivation of the 'mundakappadam'. The chira was made up of mud from the paddy field. One night, due to some rivalry, the upper caste people killed a 'pulaya' (which is considered as an untouchable caste) named "Kandan". They buried him alive in that chira(mud dam). Later people found it "kandan" was buried alive in that chira. But because of the culprits social status nobody protested. Later the people indicated that 'chira' with a prefix 'kandan'; and it became 'Kandanchira'.Origin of 'peroor kaavu': It was a small stone deity worshipped by the dalits who are doing the cultivation jobs in the mundakappadam. As it's considered as the protector of farming of that area, people give their offerings during the harvest season. (Still the festival of the temple starts in the harvesting season only). Then some poojari (hindu priest) who got this land from the Travancore king as 'pandarappattam', which is donating land to a brahmin on the belief that will avoid curse and bring prosperity to the family. The poojari then claimed a presence of hindu deity power in that stone and constructed a compound wall around it. Later Bhadrakali (a goddess for dalits by hindu upper casts.Other dalit god is shiva, father of bhadrakali, lives in crematory land, wears snake in his neck and tiger skin as body cover)idol was installed there. Then the nair community took over the place and they build a temple there. After the building of the compound wall dalits are kept away 60 feet away from the compound wall. The place for dalits where they can put money and other offerings to the deity is still there in the middle of the paddy field. (The poojari/velichappadu will collect the offerings from dalits after sprinkling some water over it for cleansing by which it is believed that will remove the untouchability.)An incident which allowed the dalits to enter the temple happened after the "Sri Chithira Thirunal's procalmation".The main ritual of the temple during the festival is 'Ninakudam' and 'kumbhakudam'. Even after the '"temple entry" proclamation, the Nair category keep the dalits 60 feet away from the temple. If a dalit offered 'ninakudam (which is filled with a mix of turmeric water, lime water and rice powder it together give a blood like liquid, and is considered as to please 'kaali') or 'Kumbhakudam' (which is filled with a mix of turmeric water and rice powder) both carrying a peeled coconut, with some leaves on top of the pot, has to put down the pot at the nagathara which is 60 feet away from the compound wall. Then the 'velichappadu' (believed to be a representation of the deity in a temple) will cleanse the pots and took it over the temple for poojas. For this cleansing dalits has to pay extra money or their offering will not be entertained. In one festival season dalits decided to enter the temple. One dalit who returned from military service gather all of them. When the nairs protected the military man threw the coconut which is placed on top of the pot, and hit on the chest of the nair leader made him fall headlong. With a mutiny the dalits entered the temple.V.D. Rajappan, is the only celebrity who settled in Peroor. He's known as the 'father of parody' in Kerala. Other artists who belong to Peroor are Jyaprakash aka JP (violin), Aneesh (vocal), Santhosh aka Vaishakhan (painting and drawing) and Jayakumar Parady (music composing, lyrics and guitar)".
