- Pikeview,_Colorado abstract "Pikeview (Pike View, Pike's View, designated at 38.9152705°N 104.8221988°W / 38.9152705; -104.8221988) is a populated place annexed by Colorado Springs as the "Pike View Addition" on August 1, 1962, and which began as a Denver and Rio Grande Railroad station (Pike View Station, Pike's View Station). Named for its scenic view of distant Pikes Peak, the station area of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad at a confluence on Monument Creek was north of the Roswell junction and south from the 1875 Husted station. "In 1894, the [Colorado Springs] Irrigation System was further extended by the construction of the Pike View Reservoirs Nos. 1 ad 2, the Monument creek pipe line and the Monument flume and pipe line." By 1906 the station included a depot, a pond, and a road intersection of the north-south Monument Valley Highway with a road west to the Rampart Range.Nearby 19th century sites now within the USGS's "Pikeview" quadrangle include the Cragmor Sanatorium to the east of the station site and across Monument Creek and the former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (the 1909 The Modern Woodmen of America Sanatorium was to the west). By 1903 1 mi (1.6 km) north of the station, Pike View had a "graded school" house and the Pikeview Mine—a shaft mine for subbituminous coal (using the room-and-pillar system by 1911) (cf. the modern Pikeview Quarry along the Rampart Range). A 1912 concrete girder bridge and curve in the tracks were the area of train accidents, including a head-on collision.Nichols Airport was adjacent to the Pikeview Station, Papeton, and Roswell, Colorado, by 1950. Despite being nearer to the Husted station, the United States Air Force Academy site near the "Pine Valley Airpark" was called the "Pike View site" before it was selected by the Land Acquisition Commission in 1955 (flying resumed in 1964 after the academy was completed).".
