- Pootharekulu abstract "Pootharekulu or Poothareku (singular) is a popular sweet from Andhra Pradesh, India. 'Pootha' is coating and 'Reku' (plural Rekulu) is sheet in Telugu. PoothaRekulu are also known as ‘Paper sweets’ as they give the appearance of folded paper. It is a wafer-like sweet of Andhra Pradesh. Atreyapuram, a village and mandal in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh is very famous for preparation and trading of this sweet. This recipe is found to be prepared in other parts of Andhra Pradesh, mostly in the eastern districts like Vizianagaram. It was Mr. Mudunuri Akki Raju Garu who invented Pootareku in Atreyapuram more than 100 yrs. back, according to writer/director Vamsy. However, there is also some cultural evidence that the erstwhile aristocratic families of Medak District, under the aegis of the Nizam were the earliest developers of these paper thin sweet forms. It is a labor-intensive job, prepared mostly by the economically weaker sections. Pootharekulu the main ingredient prepared by the poor is procured at very cheap prices. With value additions, it becomes a delicacy which is sold at high prices in the cities. Because of unremunerative returns, it is a dying art.".
