The title is explained: "das ist: Übung der Gottseeligkeit / In Christlichen und trostreichen Gesängen" (which means: practice of godliness in Christian and comforting chants), intended to be used in both church and private service. The hymnal appeared to the mid of the 18th century in almost 50 editions and is known as the first publication of hymns by Paul Gerhardt. The subtitle continues: "Das ist: Ubung der Gottseligkeit in Christlichen und trostreichen Gesängen/ H.
